Touting at the local
wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, has increased to an
alarming rate and leading to losses for airlines.
On several occasions,
miscreants posing as airline officials at the General Aviation Terminal, GAT of
the Ikeja airport swindle naïve intending travellers of their luggage and
money.
Recently, due to the 50
per cent increase in airfares, these usually armed touts reportedly
dispossessed some undiscerning passengers of their personal effects.
On Thursday, a case was
reported of an intending passenger to Abuja who was said to have succumbed to
the pressures of a tout who promised to get him a half-price ticket. After the
recent airfare increase, a one-way ticket to Abuja costs about N15, 000 as
against N10, 000 before. But the passenger was promised a seat for N7, 500.
Not until the flight had
started taxing on the runway, did the passenger know he had been deceived.
Also, it has been
reported that on several occasions at night, travellers who arrive or are
intending to board a night flight have been harassed and robbed of their
personal effects by these touts who disguise as airport taxi operators.
However, in an
interview with a senior airport official who declined to have his name in
print, it was gathered that most of these unaccredited car operators are
ex-Nigeria Airways workers who claim they needed to work at the airport to earn
a living.
Although the airport
manager could not be reached as he was said to be very occupied at the time of
the visit, some Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria staff attested to the fact
that their was need for additional hands at the local airport. “We are
quite few to work effectively here. The cargo bay is there, runway, terminal
and the other places. More FAAN operatives are needed here”, the source
said.
