The people of Ife-Odan in Ejigbo Local Government Area of
Osun State have resolved to put a stop to female genital mutilation in
compliance with UNICEF and Osun State government counsel.
Madam Ajoke Oyewole, a 70 year-old woman and spokespersons
of the community, affirmed that they took the collective decision at the
interactive session with UNICEF monitoring and evaluation team that was in the
community recently.
Oyewole said the community had been educated about the evil
effect of female gentile cutting, adding that medical officials attached to the
community’s health facility now do male circumcision.
Speaking earlier, the leader of the monitoring team, Pastor
Femi Fasoyiro, told people of the community that UNICEF intervention was to
complement other partners, such as the state, local government and communities
in the development initiative.
The monitoring and evaluation director pleaded with the
communities to ensure the effective usage of supplies that were made available
for their comfort.
Meanwhile, contractors handling all the on-going road
projects in Osun State have been assured of maximum government support to
ensure the early completion of the projects.
The state Commissioner for Works and Transport, Dr. Bayo
Faforiji, gave the assurance at Olode-Ife during routine inspection of some
road projects.
The commissioner said the contractors should reciprocate
government patronage with good quality job, adding that Osun State government
will make sure that funds are made available to them as at when due.
He particularly charged the contractor handling the
Ifewara-Faforiji-Olode road to be more diligent to ensure early completion of
the project.
