Last Updated: Monday, November 1st, 2004 HOME | Previous Page Customs impounds eight containers in Calabar By Bassey Inyang Correspondent, Calabar   Eight containers of smuggled textile materials have been seized in Calabar by the Nigeria Customs Services (NCS). Among the seized containers, four bore T-shirts while three contained assorted textile materials for upholstery. The last one contained towels of various sizes. Customs’ Area Comptroller in-charge of Cross River and Akwa Ibom states and the Calabar Free Trade Zone (CFTZ), Mr Gabriel Aliyu, said the smuggled items were uncovered through the manifest of the containers. Aliyu, who briefed journalists in Calabar on the seizure of the items, disclosed that 80 other containers were yet to be examined, stressing that more contraband could be uncovered. The comptroller stated that owner of the containers were yet to be identified, disclosing that they came in from China and their contents were estimated at several millions of naira. Aliyu pointed out that the importers of the prohibited items would be discovered, adding that further action would be determined by higher authorities.   Copyright� 2004. All Rights Reserved.
