The Minister of Housing
and Urban Development, Mrs. Mobolaji Osomo, has stressed the need for members
of the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV) to continue
to uphold the culture of excellence for which the institution was known.
Mrs. Osomo, who said
this in an address she delivered at the 2004 NIESV Fellows induction, held at
the Golden Gate Restaurant, Ikoyi, Lagos, admonished the newly inducted fellows
to endeavor to sustain with vigour the well-established nobility of members of
the exclusive group.
According to her, the
decision by the Board of Fellows of the institution to confer the honour on the
20 new fellows was a step in the right direction, adding that they should
strive to adhere to the tenets of the profession.
She charged them to be
worthy ambassadors of the institution and pointed out that with their new
status, they were expected to carry themselves with utmost dignity.
President of the
institution, Mr. Charles Adebiyi, reminded the newly inducted fellows of the
enormity of the challenges of being fellows of the institution, noting that
they were now expected to represent the institution with candour and dignity.
He advised them to
always seek the support and counsel of their senior colleagues. According to
him, by so doing, they would not falter in the discharge of their
responsibility. Adebiyi said that it was of paramount importance that the newly
inducted fellows should have at the back of their minds that they would now be
required to, at all times, contribute to the development of the institution.
The NIESV helmsman
disclosed that the institution has established NIESV Ventures for the purpose
of engaging in commercial activities, noting that this development was to
further boost its status.
A past president of the
institution, Mr. Tade Ismail, expressed worry over the belief by some surveyors
that the profession was an avenue for making money. To him, this erroneous
impression should be erased form their thought. He added that this orientation
should be changed if only to encourage those coming into the profession afresh.
The 12th president of the institution, Mr. Williams Ododo,
who further charged them to be alive and responsible to their new assignment,
performed the induction ceremony.
