CAF assures on Nigeria, FIFA feud

By Ben Alaiya

Group Sports Editor

Continental football ruling body, CAF, has re-assured Nigeria of its readiness to lead the country’s delegation to FIFA headquarters in Zurich to appeal against a possible ban of the country from international football later in the month.

This much was disclosed by CAF executive member, Dr Amos Adamu.

NFA Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima, told Daily Independent at the weekend that contrary to reports that CAF has backed down on the earlier offer to lead Nigeria to FIFA, the body has merely reinforced its determination to lead the team to Switzerland.

According to Galadima, the latest clarification from Adamu came last weekend during a meeting he had with Adamu on the plight of the NFA regarding the threat by FIFA to ban the country by the end of the year.

“Dr Adamu was quite categorical about the willingness of CAF to help Nigeria out in the face-off with FIFA and I even told him that the world body is not ready to ban Nigeria but will no longer tolerate the manner football is being governed in the country, so we must gird our loins in the unfolding drama,” Galadima said.

The NFA chairman said only the Sports Minister, Col Musa Mohammed, is being awaited from the lesser hajj later in the week and once he returns, the team to Zurich would be constituted for the trip.

He again assured that he is sure that the country would not be banned following what he described as the very fruitful meeting he held with the National Assembly last week. “The lawmakers are ready to do anything humanly possible to meet the FIFA deadline and that is why they have been included on the team that will visit FIFA.”
