Odili rewards Angels with N10m

By Ejiro Femi-Babafemi

Reporter, Lagos

Rivers State Governor, Dr Peter Odili, surprised Rivers Angels’ players with the release of N10 million to the team despite not winning the national Challenge Cup that ended last Thursday.

Delta Queens won the cup, beating Bayelsa Queens 4-3 on penalties.

The money, released in phases, saw the governor releasing N1.5 million a week before the start of the preliminaries while N500,000 was released a week before their semi-final encounter against Bayelsa Queens, which they lost.

The remaining N8 million, which was released last week, was spent on the outstanding allowances owed the players from the commencement of the league over eight months ago.

The governor’s magnanimity came as a surprise to the players, who were expecting a lesser amount from the governor for their efforts in both competitions.

Sources, however, revealed to Daily Independent that further spending is in the offing for the team despite placing fourth in the FA Cup, where they lost the third place match to FCT Queens in a penalty shoot-out.

The source further revealed that the dramatic performance of the team in the group stages was one of the reasons the state decided to invest in the team, bearing in mind the terrible situation they were subjected to during the league.

Expressing his thanks, Coach Tunde Lawson thanked the governor for his show of affection, adding that this would be the beginning of a good thing in the team.

“We may not have qualified for the Final Six but what is heartwarming is that the governor has finally listened to the pleas of the players by settling the debts owed them,” he said.
