Local firm introduces equipment for IT, telecommunications

By Esan Sunday

Senior Finance Correspondent, Lagos

An indigenous company, Samtechs Nigeria Limited, has introduced a special external antenna system for all IT equipment as well as fixed wireless phones and GSM handsets. The company also manufactures battery back-ups and power packs.

According to the company’s Managing Director, Mr. Sola Adediran, the idea of manufacturing the items locally followed the discovery that the imported ones could not meet the needs and aspirations of Nigerians. Besides, he added, the imported ones do not last due to the disparity in electric voltage between Nigeria and the countries from where the items are imported as well as due to the weather condition in Nigeria, which is also different from what obtains abroad.

Noting that it is for these reasons that “most fixed wireless telephone companies in the country rely on us mostly for these accessories to their systems," Adediran maintained that his company has "rescued many fixed wireless telephone (FWT) operators from major network problems."

The managing director noted that the cardinal motive behind the local manufacture of the products is to reduce the problem faced by the users of the back-up equipment in getting replacements or spares for their abnormal or malfunctioning ones as well as drastically reduce the cost of purchasing imported, but non-durable ones.

He said one benefit of the Samtechs products is that they are tropicalised, to suit Nigeria and the African continent in general as he argued that most imported products were not tropicalised, which is why they don't last long.

While urging Nigerians to develop a taste for locally made goods, Adediran argued that most home made products were better than imported ones.

The company's array of products includes power packs, battery pack and the back-up charger. The power packs, which supply energy to telephones, come in the range of 9.6, 12.5, 14 volts. The battery pack, according to Adediran, can energise phones for up to two to three days when there is power outage. He referred to his company’s back up charger as unique because it is the only one in the market. Noting that the company was the sole producer of the product, he explained that telephone manufacturers do not make product obviously because they do not encounter power outages abroad. For users having problems of poor networks, reception or visibility and accessibility, the Samtechs boss said his company’s external antenna could be helpful.

“Apart from manufacturing it, we also install for interested customers", he said, adding that the antennae "are compatible with all the fixed wireless phones like Starcomms, Intercellular, MTS and Reltel."
