Varsities Have Not Increased Fees - VC
From Juliana Taiwo in Abuja
The Vice Chancellor University of Port Harcourt and Chairman Committee of Vice Chancellors, Professor Nimi Briggs has reiterated that federal universities have not increased school fees contrary to rumours being peddled by students.
Briggs told newsmen at the weekend that in accordance with the directives of government, no university has increased school fees but rather some schools were charging for municipal services which government has given its permission.
He said universities in the country cannot increase fees because it would be going against the policies of government. He stressed that students atimes are required to pay certain stipends in some of the courses they are study like the sciences and some social sciences as well.
The Vice Chancellors are responsible people and so cannot do such an outrageous thing as to increase school fees. Some of these stipend demanded are not even enough to carry out what they are suppose to do. Government itself has said it cannot continue to carry the burden of funding education alone.
Students just like to create trouble where there is none. Some of the stipend demanded are usually added to what they are going to pay, no matter how small they will raise alarm that school fees have been increased even if is N2. The same parents that complain of this municipal services charges will be the same to take their children to Ghana, United Kingdom and United States and pay in hard currency. Education anywhere in the world is not cheap, if we do not invest in Education, what else would we invest in? We are trying to provide quality education though we are struggling we are improving, he said.
It would be recalled that the Minister of Education, Professor Fabian Osuji had last week condemn the spate of increases in school fees which had led to students demonstrating in the some schools. He had reiterated that governments policy on free tuition still stands.
