Plateau Citizens Warned Against Incitement
From Funmi Peter-Omale in Jos

Citizens of Plateau state have been warned to be wary of faceless elements trying to incite the general public, especially students, the civil society, labour unions and civil servants to disrupt peace in the sttae with a view to persuading President Olusegun Obasanjo to prolong the emergency rule.

THISDAY gathered that the people who have been circulating inciting documents to whip up emotions have also been dispatching correspondences to the Presidency giving the impression that the people of the state are desirous that Maj. Gen. Chris Alli (rtd) should continue in office.

The former Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Yakubu Dati, said it was unfortunate that a clique for their own selfish interest put the lives of so many others in jeopardy.

He lamented "The recent calamity that bedevilled the state, culminating in the present predicament, no doubt robbed negatively on the state, and efforts by the good people of the state, especially the elders to restore the democartic structures were being thwarted by elements who felt their personal interest are better protected with the emergency rule."

Dati said that all hands must be on deck to salvage the battered image by the undemocratic state of emergency adding that sustenance of democracy is a global trend.

"While commending the tireless efforts of Gen Alli's administration towards entrenching lasting peace, we the concerned citizens of the sttae would like to plead that there is no alternative to democracy, and as such, we should be allowed to savour democracy like our counterparts from other sections of the country. Democracy is sustained on the rule of law, obedience to the constitution and the observance of due process" he concluded.
