Ogun Pledges Support for NPC
From Toba Suleiman in Abeokuta
Ogun State government has pledged its unalloyed commitment and assistance within available resources with National Population Commission (NPC) to ensure the successful conduct of 2005 census in the state.
The state Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, gave the pledge at the weekend while inaugurating the state Logistics and Local Government Publicity Committees on National Census at the National Union of Teachers (NUT) House, Abeokuta.
According to the him, "we cannot but reiterate the importance of a national programme as the census, considering its weight on national development indices and one of the parameters used in revenue allocation in Nigeria."
Daniel, who charged members of the committees to understand the enormous task ahead of them, enjoined people to rise up to the national clarion call and to ensure the accomplishment of the programme.
While acknowledging the successful completion of the first phase of Enumeration Area Demarcation exercise in Ifo and Ogun Water Side Local Govern-ment areas, Daniel commended chairmen and people of the areas for the assistance and cooperation given to the field functionaries.
He said it was the duty of everyone to help propagate the message of census, adding that "all hands must be on deck to inform, enlighten and encourage our people to facilitate the successful conduct of 2005 National Census."
Daniel charged the committees on the need to ensure that adequate publicity and enlightenment are carried out in every nook and cranny of the state.
The state NPC Director, Dr. Olayemi Olanipekun, said during 2005 Census Nigerians would witness a great departure from the past experience as people would be counted physically.
"Unless you are seen physically, you are not going to be counted. Besides, everybody including the homeless, the nomads, even the lunatics would all be counted wherever they all," Olanipekun said."
