Akwa Ibom Police Arrest 7 Robbery Suspects
From Efem Nkanga in Uyo

Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested seven armed robbery suspects who had in recent times terrorised the Ikot Abasi and Ibesikpo Asutan area of the state.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Richard Chime, while parading the arrested suspects before newsmen in Uyo, stated that they were arrested at their hideouts by a team of Operation Fire for Fire men of the command after a tip off.

He disclosed that the hoodlums in a bid to escape opened fire on the police who returned same. In the fierce gun battle that ensued, one Gabriel Micheal Akpan was shot, while six others were arrested by the police.

He stated that about 15 locally made guns were recovered from the suspects among other household items like television sets, VCD players, generators etc.

Also arrested and paraded before newsmen were members of a syndicate who specialise in 419 and obtaining money by tricks and other valuables from unsuspecting members of the public.

The commissioner added that based on a tip off, the police arrested one Emmanuel a.k.a Prophet, who conspired with two others named Anietie and Idoreyin, to dupe one Mrs Bassey in Eket of N700,000.

The Police boss also confirmed that a retired soldier in Orukanam killed five people including members of the same family because of a land dispute by matcheting them to death.

He added that the suspect was on the run but the police are still on his trail, stressing that it was barbaric for someone to move from house to house macheting people because of a land dispute, when there were mechanisms on ground to handle issues like land disputes without resorting to violence.

Chime urged members of the public to be alert and vigilant and inform the police when they observe anything suspicious around them.
