Group Urges FG to Restore Ngige's Security
From Emmanuel Ugwu in Enugu
Igbo Youth Movement (IYM) has urged Federal Government to move fast and restore the police security of Anambra State Governor, Dr. Chris Ngige, whom he was denied in the wake of the infamous abduction saga in July last year.
In a statement by the group's National Coordinator, Evangelist Eliot Uko, it has become pertinent for Ngige to have back his official police security in view of the forthcoming local government elections in his state.
The embattled Anambra chief executive had challenged the withdrawal of his security in court and won but Inspector General of Police, Mr. Tafa Balogun, was yet to implement the court ruling.
But IYM noted that the political undertones of the withdrawal meant that Federal Government should resolve the issue to enable Ngige enjoy the privileges of his office like any other governors in the country.
The group joined other supporters of Professor Chinua Achebe in commending the literary icon for rejecting a national honour of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR), saying it was a mark of "courage and commitment to truth and good governance" and that other Nigerians should emulate Achebe.
"Our country is in dire straits, as Anambra remains the sore conscience of the nation and Mr. President has consistently placed loyalty to his friends above the well-being of Nigeria and our nascent democracy," IYM said.
The group appealed to the President not to extend the emergency rule in Plateau State at the end of November since Governor Joshua Dariye must have learnt his lessons and should therefore be allowed back to the Government House to exercise the mandate he got from his people.
On the 2007 Igbo Presidency project, IYM warned South-east political leaders against doing it alone without carrying "our brothers in the South-south along."
It pointed out that it would be foolhardy for Igbo politicians to pretend that the other components of the old Eastern Region don't exist in political calculations.
IYM advised "Igbo politicians to establish synergy with our brothers in Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States in order to maximise our voice and our clout," adding that "an Eastern President is more appropriate than the clamour for Igbo President." `
