NCC Enlists Stakeholders in Anti-piracy War From Emmanuel Ugwu in Enugu Director General of Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), Mr. Adebambo Ade-wepo, has urged all stakeholders in the anti-piracy war to join forces to put pirates of copyright works out of business. He stated this in Enugu during a familiarisation meeting with stakeholders in the South-east zone, noting that the war against piracy "is a big challenge." "Nobody can afford to stand aside," he said, adding that "let's put our heads together without personal interests." Adewepo told the stakeholders at separate meetings with booksellers, producers and distributors of audio and video cassettes that the time has come to chart a new course in fighting piracy, adding that the past bottlenecks and problems should be put aside. "This is the time to take proactive action," he said, describing piracy as the "major leakage" in the reform programme of the present government as all the gains of reforms were being undermined by the activities of the pirates due to the harm they do to the economy. In their separate responses the stakeholders pledged their willingness to cooperate with NCC to eliminate piracy. The Executive Director of Rogers All Stars Nigeria Limited, Sir Rogers Okonkwo and Chief Osi Afason of Osi Afason Limited both recounted all the efforts made so far to put pirates out of business without success. "The pirates have turned those in the video industry to beggars," Afason lamented. In their position paper presented to NCC director general, the Enugu branch of Nigerian Booksellers and Stationers Association, said the anti-piracy was being negated by "an unholy alliance" formed by publishers with school principals, head teachers and teachers to sell books directly to students and pupils.
