In response to the need of providing sufficient and affordable transpiration service in the country, the Federal Government and United Nations (UN) are looking at the possibilities of building up capacity for the development of low-cost arm of the country's motorised transport sector.
Making this revelation in Lagos during national leadership retreat for Keke NAPEP Owners and Operators organised by Autobahn Techniques Limited, a representative of United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).
Kazuki Kitaoka said the Federal Government and UNIDO have recognised for long, that an over all refurbishment and overhaul of the nation's transport sector is a necessary prerequisite and a driving force for development and acceleration f the growth non-oil economy of the country.
Kitaoka explained that restoring Nigeria's infrastructure and access to affordable transportation will be one of the driving forces that will define the speed at which economic rehabilitation will take place.
Referring specifically to tricycle component for cargo and passengers transportation in response to the need of providing sufficient and affordable transportation, Kitaoka explained that the government has mandated UNIDO to specifically develop the components of the transport sector as it affects KEKE NAPEP Scheme.
"Only few economies around the world utilise tricycles as a primary source of transportation. The impact that this mode of transportation has on the national economy and specifically on wealth creation, can be seen in India and Thailand, the largest producers, consumers and users of tricycles in the world," he said.
Kitaoka explained that learning from these countries and exchanging knowledge with them should be a core activity in international development according to the Tokyo International Conference on Africa Development.
