'Why We Demolished Lawmaker's House'
Delta
From Jaiyeola Andrews in Asaba
Ministry of Lands and Survey and Urban Development has justified the reason for pulling down of one of the houses of House Of Represen-tatives member, Dr. Cairo Ojuigbo in Agbor, Delta State.
It also said there would be no sacred cow in the demolition exercise. One of the Sate House of Assembly members representing Ika South had briefed the press in Asaba condemming the demolition of Ojuigbo's house by the Ministry of Lands, Survey and Urban Development.
But in a press release signed by Mr. Felix Gbagi, Special Assistant to Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Urban Development Dr. Chike Okolocha and made available to THISDAY in Asaba, said "we have a duty, a task, a mandate of removing all illegal structures, in any part of the state especially the Urban Centres."
According to him, the Land in dispute does not in the first place belong to Dr. Cairo Ojuigbo, but belong to the Ministry of Edu-cation, adding that being on elite politician was not a yardstick to illegally acquired Government" land. "Nobody gave approval for private developemnt of theland in question, the building that was destroyed does not have a plan in the modern day Nigeria. I doubt if Hon. Okonta was aware of this before he briefed the press" Gbagi averred.
He further stressed that official of the Ministry had already warned Dr. Ojuigbo severally and at different stages of developing the said plot, but he refused to yield to the warnings.
"We went to Agbor to remove those illegal structures constituting an eye-sore to the state government and we all know Mr. President is visiting the state soon,so, everybody should be up and doing to ensure the visit is hitch-free and as such, illegal structure in Agbor had to be removed" the Special Assistant to the Commissioner said.
He however hinted that the State Executive Council approved the demolition exercise, adding that Hon. Okonta as a legislator is aware "that we cannot seek approval for the demolition of a single structure among others that were being demolished."
