2007 Presidency: 'No Basis for Nigeria's Existence If...'
Imo

Former Vice Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Imo State, Dr. Sylvanus Amaechi, has warned that there would be no basis for the continued existence of Nigeria if the Igbo are not allowed to produce the President in 2007.

Amaechi who is the Medical Director of Christina Hospital, Egbu, told newsmen that the Igbo had long been marginalized that only the ceding of the presidency will assuage their anger.

He noted that since the civil war ended in 1970, no Igboman had been allowed to occupy a sensitive position both in the armed forces and political system.

According to him, it was tragic that Igbo have been relegated to playing the second fiddle even when it had been established that their sweat watered the unity of Nigeria.

Amaechi argued that since Nigeria stood on a tripod i.e. Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba and the other tribes had had their fair share of political power, it was only natural to allow Igbos to produce the president come 2007.

On the recent declaration by Orlu zone of Imo State that they will cling to the governorship after eight years, the politician said it was unfair.

Everybody in Imo knows that the contest in 2007 is between Okigwe and Owerri zones. They would have to sort it out and that is what equity and fairness means, he said.

Speaking on the annual conference of the Nigerian Orthopaedic Association (NOA) Amaechi who is the president of the organization said it would hold in Jos between November 23 and 27.

He said the conference theme will dwell in the relationship between orthopaedic surgeons and traditional bone menders.

He renewed his call on the federal government to adquately equip and fund orthopeadic centres in Nigeria as a means of halting brain drain.
