From Tunde Sanni in Ilorin
Ahead its general elections on Tuesday, the United States of America may have started a subtle campaign to woo religious bodies for global peace as the country representative in Nigeria,Mr. John Campell, has stressed the need for all faiths to unite for the promotion of peace in the world.
Campell, who spoke in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital during the break of Ramadan fast with Governor Bukola Saraki and Islamic leaders in the state, reminded the faithfuls that the month of Ramadan was a time for reflection.
Let us commit ourselves to standing for unity and against those who use religion to polarize our communities. And let us stand in solidarity to build a better world for ourselves and our children, he added.
The Ambassador, who said his country cherishes religious freedom, also condemned killings of innocent citizens across the globe in the name of religion.
According to Campell, the story of Abraham and Isaac in the Holy Bible shows that God does not want us to kill each other in the name of religion.
He said in spite of several attempts by some Americans to use religion to divide his country, it had remained united with many Christian denominations, Islamic community and other religions coexisting peacefully in the country.
He recalled that to demonstrate the unity among Chris-tians and Muslim, Christian leaders in the United States stood up and condemned attempts to blame Islam for the September 11,2001 terrorists attack on the country.
They also sought ways to bridge the gaps of understanding between Muslims and Christians.
Commending some Nigerians who risked their lives to ensure unity and peace in the country, he said his country "greatly admire the courage and fortitude you have shown in opposing violence and in bringing Nigerians together."
