ABUJA — A CHIEFTAIN of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, Chief Francis Alimikhena says equity demands that Edo North Senatorial zone should produce the governor of the state in 2007. Speaking with Vanguard in Abuja, last weekend, Chief Alimikhena stated that while Edo South and Edo Central senatorial zones have produced the governor of the State, Edo North has never had the opportunity of producing the governor since the state was created.
According to him, “equity demands that the state governor in 2007 should come from Edo North because the zone has never had it since the creation of Edo State. Now that the 2007 race is about to commence, it is the turn of Edo North to produce the governor.”
He disagreed with reports making the rounds that Edo North had been negotiated out of the 2007 governorship as a consequence of a November 2002 agreement by the state party caucus that ceded the slot to Edo Central, claiming that there was no such agreement.
"There was no such agreement. The Edo North Senatorial zone was not negotiated out of the race. How could Edo North be negotiated out of the race? First of all, if you take the population of Edo State, you would discover that even if we want to accept the claim of Edo South to having the highest population, the next in line in terms of population is Edo North followed by Edo Central.
“What criteria would they use to zone out Edo North with such population. There was no such meeting. According to the State Governor, he said it was a gentleman’s agreement that Edo South should produce the governor and it was also a gentleman’s agreement that after Edo South, it would go to Edo North.
“So, there was no zoning; there was nothing concrete that zoned out Edo North from the race. Edo North is properly in the race,” Alimikhena said, pointing out “Edo North is largely united for the 2007 governorship project.”
He, however, noted that there might be some people who are not disposed to the project.
