BENIN CITY — ARMED robbers, dressed in Mobile Police uniform, weekend, attacked and dislodged a police team along Iruekpen-Sabongida-Ora road in Esan West local government area of Edo State. The police patrol van was also set ablaze.
The robbers later killed a Police Constable in their attack on a bank in Sabongida-Ora.
The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Paul Ochonu has however solicited the assistance of residents of the state in the provision of information to arrest the gang of robbers identified as specializing in the attack on the men of the police found during their armed robbery operation.
Vanguard gathered that the robbers, dressed in mobile police uniform and in a BMW car, opened fire on a check point in the area, wounding some officers and went ahead to set ablaze the patrol van marked "Operation-fire-for-fire” without resistance from the policemen, who had taken to their heels.
The bandits, according to eyewitness account, opened fire on a checkpoint mounted by about six officers as they approached, forcing the policemen to flee without deaths being recorded.
After the attack on the policemen, the robbers were reported to have gone ahead to set ablaze the police van before leaving the scene to invade a bank in Sabongida-Ora, where the police Constable at the bank was shot dead.
“They killed the Constable known to the people as Mr. Taiye and moved into the banking hall and ordered everybody at the hall to lie face down, while three others loaded their bags with money from the bank vaults. The leader of the bandits then started shooting into the air and they left” an eyewitness told Vanguard yesterday.
All attempts to get the Sabongida-Ora Divisional Police Officer, Mr. M. Efe and the Divisional Head of Ekpoma Police Station, Mr H.O. Nwozuruke failed as they asked our correspondent to contact the command headquarters to speak on the incidents.
