Awka — No fewer than 200 students have either been expelled or suspended by the authorities of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka for examination malpractices. The University has also suspended two lecturers, one of them a professor of Psychology for collecting money from student to pass them and the other one for illegal sale of books to students. The measures, according to the University’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Godson Okafor who spoke to journalists in Awka, was part of the “cleansing the rots in the university embarked upon by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ilochi Okafor (SAN)”.
The PRO announced that the vice-chancellor recently provided over 60 microscopes to the university’s college of medicine in Nnewi. According to Okafor, the students involved in examination malpractices were either expelled or suspended for between one year or more. Also he said, all secret cult members caught by the authority of the university are promptly expelled in line with the Federal Government’s directives. On the suspended lecturers, Okafor explained that the professor of Psychology, a former Dean of Faculty of Social Science was said to have collected money, specifically N2000 from some Diploma students to pass them in what they called “sorting”.
According to the PRO, as at the time, the lid was blown open, over 37 students had paid the money through their Class Representative. The other suspended lecturer, a former Dean of Faculty of Management Sciences was alleged to have sold books illegally to students, against the policy of the university. He was said to have compiled the list of the students who bought the book allegedly sold for N3000 to ensure that they pass his course.
Okafor also spoke on some steps being taken by the vice-chancellor to improve the standard of facilities in the university. Such steps, he said, include the provision of 60 microscopes to the college of medicine, as well as expanding the Anotomy laboratory. The PRO said that practical in teachings which hitherto was suspended in the university has been revitalised by the Ilochi Okafor administration. The vice-chancellor, he further said, even goes round to supervise practical teachings. Additional class rooms, he further explained have been provided to create conducive learning environment to the students.
