The Delta State government has denied any involvement in the attempt on the life of former President of National Conscience Party (NCP) Chief Gani Fawehinmi. The government stated that if there was any threat to Fawehinmi's life such threat was not from the states quarters. In a press statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant to the state governor on Media, Mr. Abel Oshevire, the governorment urged Fawehinmi to critically look inward and examine himself and his immediate environment, so as to determine if such threat are not coming from his quarters. "The attention of the Delta State Government has been drawn to a statement signed by one Mojeed Ajao from the chamber of Gani Fawehinmi alleging an attempt on his (Fawehinmi's) life. The statement read in part that "the man asked the security man again, is this not the residence of Chief Gani Fawehinmi who is handling a case against Governor James Ibori?" Ordinarily we won't have bothered to respond to this wild and reckless allegation, but for the allusion to the on-going court case at Abuja High Court and for the records and benefit of the reading public who might have been misled by the allegation", the statement reads. The government explained that the statement from Fawehinmi's chamber is not only in bad faith but a deliberate attempt by the lawyer to smear Ibori's reputation. "Gani Fawehnmi on his own has over the years been known for making wild and unsubstantiated allegations over assassination attempts on his life and we see this latest one as another of his usual pranks and attempt to attract undue public attention. If indeed he genuinely feels threatened, we advice him to seek police protection," the government stated. The statement further reads that the government has absolute respect for the sanctity of human life and due process. "We have infinite confidence in the judiciary and definitely have no reason whatsoever to threaten Chief Fawehinmi's life for doing his legitimate work". "Fawehinmi is not the first lawyer to be involved in this case. Before him were; Chief Afe Babalola, a respected Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) who was at both the Appeal and Supreme courts and Mr. Moses Oddiri, who was at the Gwagwalada High Court, Abuja. None of these lawyers ever alleged attempt on their lives on account of the case," it stated. The Delta State Government advised Fawehinmi to desist from making wild allegations and seeking cheap publicity. A press statement from the lawyers chamber, duly signed by Mr. Mojeed Ajao, stated that the civilian security guard employee of the chambers attached to Fawehinmi's house at No 9A Ademola Close, G R A Ikeja, reported that at about 6.00 PM on Monday November 1, while on duty, he saw six young men in a black tinted BMW car parked very close to the gate of the house. Ajao reiterated that one of the six men came out and approached the civilian security guard, looking agitated and menacing, asking him whether he knows Fawehinmi, but he answered in the negative. According to the statement, the guard added that the men asked him again if that was not the residence of Fawehinmi who is handling a case against Ibori to which he said no.
