FRIDAY , NOVEMBER 5, 2004   RAMADAN 23, 1425 A.H.           Obasanjo meets Indian PM, canvasses support for AU President Olusegun Obasanjo has met on Wednesday with the Indian Prime Minister, Mr Manmohan Singh to canvass support for the country's reform agenda and the African Union. According to a statement issued in New Delhi, by Mrs Remi Oyo, Obasanjo's Senior Special Assistant on Media, the need for increased trade and logistical support for AU's troops in the Darfur region of western Sudan, dominated the talks. Oyo said that while India had expressed interest to invest in Nigeria in the oil and power sectors, Mr. Singh had also expressed the willingness of his country to invest in a fibre optic project and a satellite link between all AU member nations. The fibre optic and satellite are projects under the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) and India had expressed her willingness to facilitate and coodinate the project, which would link all capitals of AU member nations. India's offer to facilitate a loan of 200,000 million U.S. dollars to execute the project was also considered at the meeting, which lasted for about one hour. The statement also said that Obasanjo, who is the current chairman of the AU, had briefed the prime minister on efforts to resolve all conflicts in the continent and asked for understanding and logistic support from India. He also met with the leader of the ruling Congress Party, Mrs Sohnia Ghandi and congratulated her for the recent victory of her party at the polls. The president had since returned to Abuja.
