Kano to host 2005 ANA convention

HOSTING right has been granted to the Kano state branch of Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), for the 2005 edition of its annual convention.

The branch secured it on Saturday, October 30, 2004 at Lokoja, Kogi state where the 23rd edition took place at the Confluence Beach Hotel. Kano beat Bayelsa state to second position to clinch it while the latter is to host the 2006 Silver Jubilee edition in Yenagoa.

The national financial secretary of the association who is a member of Kano branch, Hajiya Aisha Zakari and the branch chairman, Dr. Yusuf Adamu of Geography Department, Bayero University Kano, strongly defended Kanos case.

The national president, Prof. Ohe Obafemi, while congratulating Kano branch, urged it to surpass the feat of the Kogi branch.

Dr. Adamu promised to leave no stone unturned to ensure that the forthcoming convention in the centre of commerce state is successful. He said it is an opportunity to showcase the legendary hospitality and culture of Kano and its rich literary traditions.

The theme of the Lokoja convention was Creative Writing and Literary Criticism in Nigeria: Challenges of Contemporary Critical Practice.

Some of the highlights of the convention, which were declared open by the governor of Kogi state, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, was a play INIKPI directed by Dr. Emmy Idegu of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, award of literary prizes, a boat cruise on the Niger and Benue rivers, visits to historical places like the first primary school in Northern Nigeria, Lokoja Cenotaph and the Tomb of Emir Baba Aliyu (Emir Alu) of Kano who was deposed by the British Expedition Forces in 1903 and exiled to Lokoja.
