DAILY TRIUMPH-Obasanjos speculated third term bid insult - Gana

Obasanjos speculated third term bid insult - Gana

Form ATIKU S. SARKI, Abuja

The Political Adviser to Mr. President, Prof. Jerry Gana has denied speculations that Chief Olusegun Obasanjo will extend his tenure beyond 2007.

According to him, this is totally unfounded and untrue, adding that there are no plans whatsoever for Mr. President to extend his tenure beyond 2007.

Prof. Gana who was briefing press men in Abuja explained that the 1999 constitution provides for only two terms for the president and governors. Let me re-assure Nigerians that Mr. President has no intention whatsoever of violating the provision of the Nigerian constitution of seeking a third term, he said.

He explained that Chief Obasanjo, being the current chairman to the African Union and that of NEPAD Implementation Committee has totally resolved to give leadership by example in matters of democracy, good governance and integrity.

He lamented that Mr. President finds the allegation on extension of his tenure to be a painful insult on his integrity and a strong commitment to constitutional democracy, stressing that as the military head of state in 1979, Obasanjo voluntarily handed over power to an elected civilian government, even though he had all the military power and international connection to continue in office, if he so wished.

Will he now in his old age be struggling to hang on to power? he queried.

It is interesting to note that while peddlers of ugly rumours are busy in their unpatriotic trade, Mr. President has been busy designing a political reform agenda that would deepen, widen and sustain democracy in Nigeria, he added.

The adviser, however, appealed to all Nigerians to focus on matters that would promote the building of a strong, healthy, democracy and peaceful Nigeria rather than spreading rumours.

In the interest of peace, stability and good governance in Nigeria, we plead with them to stop this unpatriotic act.

He also pleaded to the media not to encourage those who indulge in peddling rumours about a hidden agenda because there is none, explaining that at present the uppermost in the presidents agenda is the reformation of the Nigerian economy to facilitate wealth creation, poverty reduction and employment generation
