Mediation Centre handles 75,000 cases in five years
By JOSEPH AIMIENMWONA
Saturday, November 6, 2004

The Citizens Mediation Centre, an arm of the Lagos State Ministry of Justice has so far disposed off 75,000 cases brought before it since 1999 when the centre was established. Among the cases adjudicated on are rents, landlord/tenant matters, debts, employer/employee disagreements as well as family fracas. Such cases, according to sources are usually based on petitions on alleged human rights violation from aggrieved persons who prefer to seek redress at the centre as opposed to the conventional courts where there are bureaucratic bottle necks as regards dispensation of justice.

According to the Director, Mrs. Efunbowale Gbadebo, at least 500 cases are received on a daily basis explaining that open centres have been established at Allen Avenue, King George Street among others to decongest the astronomical increase in the number of reported cases at its Alausa secretariat headquarters.
Already, international donor agencies like the Ford foundation and some others have identified areas of cooperation with centre.

Mrs. Gbadebo further explained the services as voluntary because the lawyers are drawn from the Lagos State Ministry of Justice as part of the human rights posture of the Senator Bola Tinubu’s administration.
She however said that the Citizens Mediation Centre was not a regular court describing its functions as alternative dispute resolution centre. She also spoke about regular plans to sensitise the people particularly aggrieved litigant to avail themselves of the establishment of the centre to seek redness rather than embarking on illegal solution to solve their problems.
Gbadebo added that addingserious cases such as police brutality are also adjudicated upon in conjunction with the Office of the Public Defender, a unit of the Directorate for Citizens Rights of the Lagos State Justice Ministry.
