President Olusegun Obasanjos daughter, Dr. Iyabode Obasanjo-Bello, may have quietly signified her intention to contest the Ogun Central senatorial seat in the 2007 election.
A source in the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party told our correspondent in Abeokuta that Obasanjo-Bello, who is also the state Commissioner for Health, had disclosed her ambition to party leaders.
According to the source, the commissioner is making plans to reoganise her political machinery as part of plans to actualize her intention.
Commenting on Obasanjo-Bellos senatorial ambition, a party leader, who pleaded anonymity, said: There is nothing wrong in her contesting an election. Her appointment into the cabinet of Governor Gbenga Daniel was on merit and she has proved that she did not get the job through her fathers influence.
The party leader said Obasanjo-Bello, after performing creditably as a commissioner, could also contest any elective post, adding that the electorate will decide.
When Saturday Punch contacted the commissioner over the development, she neither confirmed nor denied it.
Obasanjo-Bello instead stated that her main concern at the moment was her job as the state commissioner for health.
She said that she would steer clear of anything that could disturb her from implementing the state governments qualitative health programmes.
