While Palestinian Libe-ration Organisation (ILO), President, Yasser Arafat lies in a coma "between life and death" as reported by different sources, a controversy has broken out between Israelis and Palestinians over a likely burial site. Also, a possible successor to the Palestinian strongman has not been found. He did not name a successor and his present state has raised fears of chaos among Palestinians who have been waging a prolonged uprising against Israel. United States President George W. Bush yesterday said Washington would continue to "work for a free Palestinian state that's at peace with Israel" if Arafat died. Bush had backed the idea of a Palestinian state as part of a peace deal with Israel, but has tried to shut Arafat out. The death of Arafat who is seen by Israel and Washington as an obstacle to peace could alter the dynamics of the Middle East conflict. Palestinian envoy to France, Leila Shahid, denied yesterday that the 75-year-old Arafat currently in a French military hospital, is brain dead. Rather, he was in a reversible coma. But Israeli Channel 2 television had reported that he was brain dead even as United Press International maintained yesterday that medical sources in Paris have confirmed that Arafat is brain dead. Arafat is in a state of "cerebral death," the sources was quoted as saying. Back home, 14 Palestinian factions met in a show of unity meant to avoid strife in a possible power vacuum. Mahmoud Abbas, the former Palestinian prime minister, is reported to have taken over the leadership of the Palestine Liberation Organisation and Fatah - the biggest faction in the PLO and Arafat's political organisation.
