Health and development experts have raised an alarm on the impact of HIV/AIDS on the livelihood of farmers in the country which may threaten food security in the not too distant future. At the dissemination of a report sponsored by the British Department of International Development, (DFID), on the "Impact of AIDS on Rural Livelihoods in Benue State" over the weekend in Abuja, Director Public Health of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Edugie Abebe observed that if nothing is done now about the threat to food security in the country as a result of the impact of the disease on farmers and people living in the rural areas there will be a crisis regarding food security in the country. "60-70 per cent of Nigerians are in agriculture, so its a big problem and threat to the food security situation and if nothing is done about this in the next 5-10 years, there will be no food for people to feed and Nigeria could be faced with the risk of hunger in another decade or so" said Abebe. Stating that the study gives an insight into the impact of the disease on the agriculture sector of the country, Dr. Abebe prayed for a replication of such reports not only in all states of the federation, but also in different sectors of the economy including oil, education and other sectors to assess the impact of the epidemic on different vocations. The report she said is timely with useful data that can be used to influence policy decisions and to suggest areas that need specific attention in policy development. The report which focussed on households selected randomly in 3 local governments of Benue State revelaed that as a result of the disease, livelihoods are under immense pressure. With over 70 per cent of citizens engaged in farming as a result of the epidemic, there is a reduction in cultivated areas, yield decline, farms less well maintatined and delayed harvests.
