In the bid to enlist the support of youths in its current campaign against Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) and other health hazards, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control(NAFDAC) will next week Tuesday kick off the zonal sensitisation workshops for members of NAFDAC consumers safety clubs in secondary schools all over the country. The sensitisation workshops being co-sponsored by United Nations Children Fund (UNIFEF), are billed to hold in the nation's six geo-political zones with SouthWest and SouthEast taking the lead on Tuesday in Ibadan and Enugu respectively. DirectorGeneral of NAFDAC, Dr. Dora Akunyili dropped the hint saying that the zonal workshops would be held simultaneously with 2004 annual secondary schools essay competition at the six centers, which include Kaduna, Gombe, Port- Harcourt and Abuja. Dr. Akunyili stated that the secondary school essay competitions will feature award of prizes for winners. She explained that the NAFDAC Consumers Safety Club was established by the agency in order to inculcate in Nigerian youths the culture of prevention and safe healthy living through rejection of fake drugs, unwholesome foods and other substandard regulated products. The Director General disclosed that safety clubs have so far been established in 370 secondary schools in the 36 states of the federation and federal capital Territory, Abuja while efforts were in top gear to expand its membership to other schools yet to be covered.
