Chairman of the organisation and mobilisation sub-committee of the National Cocoa Development Committee (NCDC) and Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Chief Abiodun Aluko at the weekend in Abuja gave fresh insight on the rationale behind the recent ban on cocoa powder by the Federal Government. Speaking at a news conference in Abuja, Aluko said the ban was designed to create room for the local market in view of the low consumption level of the product in the country. He noted that cocoa when exported as beverage would yield more foreign exchange for the country as against raw exports while maintaining that the Federal Government had agreed to sponsor the use of cocoa beverages and other products at public functions, primary and secondary schools in a bid to encourage cocoa consumption. On the objectives/achievements of his committee, he noted that the committee was saddled with the responsibility of sensitising and mobilising cocoa farmers, setting up of a directory of cocoa farmers and data bank as well as determining the quantity and quality of cocoa produced by each local government in the country and the level of exportation. The Deputy Governor listed the committee's achievements to include encouraging state governments to distribute cocoa seedlings free of charge to cocoa farmers which culminated in the distribution of 500,000 and 1,000,000 cocoa seedlings to farmers by the Ekiti and Oyo State governments.
