Benue State House of Assembly has expressed its concern over increasing number of people taking their lives through hanging on account of worsening poverty levels in the country. The assembly members expressed concern that conditions of living have degenerated to a level where some Nigerians believe the best way out is to commit suicide. Speaker of the house, Mr Mzenda Iho, said there was the need for members of the legislature to respond swiftly by finding ways to halt the trend. He specifically called on legislators to forward motions and bills that would ensure greater democratic dividends for the people. The speaker cited the death of two people in barely two weeks, who killed themselves by hanging in Makurdi, the Benue State capital. He described the incidents which took place while the Benue Assembly members were on recess, as tragic and deserving serious consideration by the leaders. The 29 member assembly had at the heat of the controversy over the recent hike in the price of petroleum products, called on President Olusegun Obasanjo to revert to the old price of petroleum products in order to reduce the hardship posed by the new price regime. Barely two weeks ago a 45-year-old man had commited suicide in Makurdi. The deceased had used a loose cloth which he tied to his ceiling in his sitting room to take his life. Barely two weeks later, a former staff of Bank of the North also committed suicide. His wife had said her husband had before the incident told her that life had become unbearable and he wanted to kill himself. The deceased, Alexander Ogbaji was a computer operator with the bank, but was sacked in August this year. Since then things were no longer the same coupled with difficult conditions occasioned by the several reforms being carried out by government.
