Heroine award for sadism
SIR: The European heroine 2004 award recently made to Dr. (Mrs.) Ngozi-Iweala in London smacks of sadism. She was honoured for trimming Nigeria's civil service, cutting fuel subsidy and installing protective government accounting systems. The negative results of these purported achievements have been workers' retrenchment, mass poverty and deplorable delay in budget implementation.
As Nigeria's Minister of Finance, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala should dedicate her services and loyalty to Nigeria rather than to Europe and the World Bank, or the International Monetary Fund. With her present role, most citizens regard her as an enemy and traitor to the cause of the common good.
