Missing ship: Ive no hand in it Afolayan, Naval boss

ABIODUN ADELAJA, Abuja

AMIDST lingering controversy over the missing ship saga, Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) Vice Admiral Samuel Afolayan has described allegations that he knew about the disappearance of the ship, MT African Pride, as totally false and unfounded.

A former Commanding Officer (CO) of NNS BEECROFT, Navy Captain Peter Duke, under whose custody the ship was held for about seven months, had last week told the House of Representatives committee on Navy that Admiral Afolayan was allegedly culpable in the disappearance of the ship.

MT African Pride which was arrested and detained over illegal oil bunkering disappeared in August while under the custody of the Navy.

Afolayan, who absolved himself of complicity in the disappearance of the ship through a statement, weekend, in Abuja, described the allegations of culpability against him and three other Naval chiefs as unsubstantiated.

Captain Duke, the CNS said, was tried and convicted on a general court martial although not in connection with MT African Pride.

These charges, he said, included falsification of document, conduct prejudicial to good and order and service discipline as well as negligence of duty.

Afolayan likened Dukes testimony to "that of a drowning man looking for whatever possible straw to cling unto or better still a man who thinks his fate is sealed and as such he should not go down alone".

Duke had while testifying before the House committee alleged that the Naval chief was "in touch either directly or indirectly with owners of arrested ships" even as other allegations of money exchanging hands over MT African Pride had earlier rocked initial enquiries in its disappearance.
