Ex-convict saga: Court rules on Ibori today

FELIX DURUMBAH, News Editor

TODAY is expected to be Judge-ment Day for Gov. James Onanefe Ibori of Delta State as the Abuja High Court, baring any unforeseen circumstances pronounces whether he is the James Onanefe Ibori who was convicted in 1995 by a Bwari Upper Area Court or not.

Already, tension has risen in Delta State as the different political camps wait with bated breathe, pronouncements from the court presided by Justice Husseini Mukhtar.

The long running case kicked off when two Delta State-born stalwarts of the governors party, the peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Messrs Goodnews Goodman Agbi and Anthony Alabi went to the Abuja High Court praying it to disqualify Gov. Ibori from seeking re-election last year on the allegation that he is an ex-convict.

The matter was variously pursued by the two contending groups right up to the Supreme Court which declared that indeed one James Onanefe Ibori was convicted but ruled for a de novo (fresh) trial to pinpoint the Ibori who was convicted in 1995.

According to the Supreme Court, the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the Bwari courts records of proceedings did not identify which Ibori was so convicted, moreso as the governor consistently denied being the ex-convict.

The particular Ibori was convicted for negligent conduct and breach of trust.

On October 29 this year, legal teams representing the plaintiffs, led by Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN), and Gov. Ibori, steered by Chief Milton Ohwohoveriele, made submissions on the case before the Abuja High Court upon which justice Mukhtar fixed today as Judgement Day.
