Atiku seeks closer ties between Nigeria, Syria

VICE President Atiku Abubakar has called for a robust economic relationship between Nigeria and Syria.
Speaking last Friday while receiving the Head of Mission, Embassy of the Syrian Arab Republic in Nigeria, Mr. Haitham
H. Saad, at the state house, Abuja, the Vice President noted that Nigeria and Syria have shared cultural and religious
relationships which he said was very historical adding that there was a need to elevate the relationship of the
two countries to an economic level.
"I believe it is time we elevate our relationship to an economic level. That is the only way we can experience
a corresponding increase in relationship, regular visits, and an improved trade and investment among the two countries."
He commended Mr. Haitham for his zeal and interest towards an improved Nigeria - Syria relations adding that Nigeria
"is as keen as Syria in ensuring a boost in the relationship between the two countries, especially in the
area of trade and investments."
"Let me assure you that we shall do our best and what is necessary on our part to see that relationship improves
with Syria, there is no other better time than now. This is the most wonderful opportunity to promote trade and
investment, especially with the ongoing economic reforms of deregulation and privatisation being implemented in
the country," he said.
Speaking earlier, Mr. Saad on behalf of himself and the people of Syria expressed delight on the efforts of this
administration on all the reforms so far.
He said that Nigeria�s credibility in Africa and the entire world has improved tremendously, adding, "Nigeria
has become the darling of all nations."
The visitor-expressed concern however, on the lull in the relationships between the two countries, which he said,
could be better �if there is an exchange of high level visits between the two governments."
