How police saved me –VC recounts ordeal     The vice chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Professor Rogers O. A. Makanjuola, has narrated his ordeal in the hands of errata students during a demonstration in the university last Wednesday. According to him, but for the prompt intervention of the police, the story would have been different. The students went on rampage following refusal by the school authorities to reinstate eight student union leaders earlier expelled from the university. Similarly, the school lecturers refused to release last semester’s exam results following non payment of staff salaries for three months. The vice chancellor who narrated his ordeal during a visit to the Inspector-General of Police, Tafa Balogun, said the students boycotted lectures and barricaded the entrance to the university and held him and the Dean, Student Affairs, hostage and assaulted them. He said the police, under the command of the Osun State Commissioner of Police, mobilised and despa-tched an anti-riot squad to the campus for his rescue without much harm. The students were later dispersed while 19 were arrested. The vice chancellor than-ked the Inspector General and the police for handling the incident peacefully, saying that police responded to his distress call of measure which he said if continued, could go a long way to save lives and property. In his response, the IGP said it was the responsibility of the police to protect life and property, saying unnec-essary protests that enda-nger life will not be tolerated by the police.
