Ayu absolves immigration over border crime
By Ruby Rabiu

The minister of Internal Affairs, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu has refuted reports that the immigration service was responsible for the increase in cross border crime in the country.
The minister said crimes at border lines may seem over bearing for the immigration service but an adequate number of competent immigration officers have already been posted to the border.
Ayu said although border crimes was a major disturbing phenomena before the present government come to power, some level of achievements have been recorded since his administration took over the mandate of leadership at internal affairs.
He revealed that most of the border crimes are perpetuated by foreigners but recently citizens of Niger Republic have been picked as culprits behind some major crises .
He announced that the service has had meetings with Niger the Republic and has successed in sensitizing the border committees and retiring most of the men who were alleged to be corrupt while replacing them with more efficient officers who are custodians of the law.
Recalling some breakthrough on border crimes, Ayu said the service, in collaboration with other security agencies recently arrested and tried Mohammed Tijjani Hamani in Nigeria.
“Between the last couple of months, we have held several meetings with the Niger Republic and have deployed a lot of immigration officers to the borders. We are also reconstructing new border posts while we hope to build over 30 border posts for efficient policing of the borders because of the diverse nature of our border lines.”
He stressed that a committee has been constituted headed by a senior immigration officer, work with other security agencies to protect border communities.
Speaking on the federal government’s contract on Commissioned Expatriate Resident Permit and Aliens Card (CERPAC) with CONTEC, the minister said he is not happy with the terms and has already asked the permission of the president to revoke the contract.
He said the permanent secretary, Mrs. Thelma Iremiren, is negotiating the contract and if the ministry is not satisfied with the terms, the contract will be terminated.
