Deputy gov leads crusade against wasteBy Olumide Bajulaiye
Lagos State deputy go- vernor, Olufemi Ped- dro, has embarked upon a crusade against filth in all the local government areas in the state to enlighten people at the grass root on the need to keep a healthy environment.
In a bid to ensure the success of the state’s new waste management system, the state government has introduced the convening of town meetings that seek to mobilise stakeholders in various communities in the state.
At the first of such town meetings, held in Oshodi and Isolo local government areas, presided over by the deputy governor, Pedro explained that the campaign initiative was part of the state government’s door-to-door sensitisation of the residents of the state on the new public sector participation refuse collecting scheme.
He said it served as a meeting point where government and the PSP operators on the one hand and residents could meet and rob minds together to achieve the desired goals.
At the town meeting, held at the Oshodi local gover-nment area on Wedn-esday, Pedro introduced licensed operators billed to handle the refuse collection in the area to the people of the area and dialogued with the residents on the need to package their refuse in black polythene bags.
Pedro explained that in the new scheme the fixed cost expected to be paid by tenements range from N50 per room to N400 per flat in low income-cost earning areas on a monthly basis, the amount he said was being heavily subsidized by the state government.
He said the refuse situation in the state has become such that needed all the corporation warranted to make it a success story, “we cannot continue to live with filth on our streets and in front of our homes, it is a fight we must all join hands to fight, spread the message of the new programme around and make sure that your neighbours bag their refuse”.
PSP operators are to hold meetings with market leaders and union leaders in garages to determine the amount such places will pay for the collection of their refuse, identify refuse pick up spots and days of collection.
The deputy governor said that the government has hired additional hands to complement the Kick Against Indiscipline Marshals responsible for crosschecking the level of compliance of the system.
Pedro is expected to take the stakeholders meeting on environment to all the local government areas in the state in the next month and end the crusade on December 7th.
