Young man held with arms and charms
By Boma Oritsemajemite West
Monday, November 8, 2004

The police in Lagos have held a suspected armed robber at the Ibiye area, along the Badagry Expressway.
They recovered from the suspect, Fatiu Saliu, a.k.a. Aboki, two live cartridges, four packets of banger, broken bottles, assorted charms and the sum of N800, all concealed in a polythene bag.

The 17-year-old mechanic, who spoke from his cell at Morogbo Police Station, Agbara, told Daily Sun that the arms and ammunition were allegedly given to him by members of the Oodua Peoples’ Congress (OPC).
He said one Adeleke, gave him the gun to help him repair the strings and confessed that the charms were used for protection.

According to him, he started romancing with the OPC coordinator when a thunderbolt hit him in his left hand and he was searching for cure, adding that the OPC man assisted him to cure the wound.
He alleged that the OPC man later persuaded him to join the association, claiming that if he could join them, no harm would befall him.

He said, “when I thought about the offer and remembered the pains from the thunder incident, I decided to join.”
He said, his initial assignment was to repair the gun and then, the safe keeping of charms and ammunition, adding “see me now, if I had known I would have rejected the offer.”

The motor mechanic, who was lamenting uncontrollably, begged the police to forgive him adding that if they should free him, he would quit OPC.
Police investigators described his story as untrue, stating that Saliu was a notorious armed robber, who served also as an armourer to a notorious gang.
