| Man docked for impersonating
police chief

A 58-year-old man, who allegedly impersonated a Deputy Commissioner
of Police (DCP) has been arraigned at Chief Magistrate’s
Court in Otta, Ogun state.
Identified as Tajudeen Atobatele, the accused was arrested
at the Agbado Police Post in Police uniform with the rank
and paraphernalia of a Deputy Commissioner of Police.
Daily Sun learnt he was arrested trying to influence the release
of a motorcycle impounded by men of the Nigerian Police.
He was arraigned on a two-count charge of impersonation and
illegal possession of Police uniform.
Atobatele on September 23, 2004, at Agbado station, in Ado-Odo/Otta
Magistrate District did impersonate a police officer by wearing
a full deputy commissioner of police uniform, to carry out
unlawful act, whereas you are not employed by the Nigeria
police or attended any police officers’ training and
thereby committed an offence punishable under section 109(a)
of the criminal code cap 29, Vol. 2 Law of Ogun State the
prosecuting police officer said.
The second charge was "that you Tajudeen Atobatele on
the same date, time and place, did unlawfully have in your
possession one complete police uniform with the badges of
deputy commissioner of police rank and thereby committed an
offence punishable under section 430 of the criminal code
cap 29 Vol. 2 of Ogun State.
The accused person however pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Having listened to the plea by the defence counsel, Mr Ameh,
the trial chief magistrate, Mrs Catherine Ogunsanya, granted
the accused person bail in the sum of N100,000, two sureties
in like sum, who must reside in the judicial area and be prepared
to submit their passport photographs with that of the accused
persons.
On the plea for the release of Atobatele’s Mercedes
Benz car in the custody of the police, Chief Magistrate Ogunsanya
advised the counsel to file a motion in respect of that.
The matter has however been adjourned to November 18, 2004.
