Atiku's group backs Marwa for president
From Saxone Akhaine, Kaduna

THOUSANDS of Northern youths at the weekend declared support for former Lagos State Military Administrator, Brig-Gen. Muhammed Buba Marwa (rtd), for the 2007 presidential election. The youths were formerly of the Atiku Abubakar camp in the race.

The various youths' representatives, who converged in Kaduna, met at the instance of the Kaduna State Solidarity Group where they announced their shift of loyalty from the vice president to Marwa for the 2007 presidential race.

In his speech, the convener of the meeting and chairman of Kaduna Solidarity Group, Malam Kabiru Buhari, said that the various political groups and youths' organisations in the North, after the Conference of Political Youth Activists, have decided to part ways with Atiku to embrace Marwa's candidacy in 2007. He added that the groups' decision is to ensure that the nation is strengthened with a credible candidate to move it` forward.

Buhari stated that "youths political organisations formerly campaigning for the presidential aspiration of Atiku Abubakar have decided, after series of consultations and investigation, to support Marwa."
He added: "Our reason is that we find it very difficult to convince the people of Kaduna and the entire northern states of the genuineness of Atiku's candidature in 2007."
Besides, the Northern Youths also said they decided to defect to the Marwa camp because the former Lagos State Administrator is a tested hand who distinguished himself while in office as a political figure and brought development in every area of human endeavour.

"As a Military Administrator of Borno State, we saw development in that state, we also are living witnesses to how he reinvigorated the Lagos State security outfit, and introduced a swift anti-crime agency, otherwise code-named Operation Sweep". Marwa also reached out to youths in the country through scholarship and acquisition of skills and other laudable development projects initiated through the Buba Marwa Endowment."
Buhari pointed out that with Marwa's leadership qualities, he would restore national unity and cohesion by putting an end to factionalisation and inter-ethnic violence, and "rebuild the country on the basis of unity, equity and social justice."
"We also know that Marwa will promote a genuine free market economy by ensuring political stability, security and peace in the land and laying a fair and just economic agenda", he added.

The youths leader added: "We know Buba Marwa will strengthen democracy so that our nation will be ruled by law and not by violence, arrogance and the idiosyncrasies of the leader."
