Edo council raises panel on Oba Market fire
From Mike Osunde, Benin
A NINE-MEMBER administrative panel of inquiry has been constituted by the Oredo Local Council of Edo State to probe the fire which gutted the Oba Market in Benin last week.
The council has also set up the traders' rehabilitation fund specifically to raise money to assist victims of the inferno.
Headed by a yet-to-be-named High Court judge, the panel will also find out if there was negligence from "any quarter when the market went up in flames". It will also recommend ways to check future outbreak of fire in the markets.
Meanwhile, the council has appealed for funds from members of the public towards the rehabilitation of the market. It has also set up an emergency management group to rescue the situation in the event of fire outbreak in markets in Benin.
The group comprises the Airforce, Benin Airport Fire Services, as well as the district police officers, the Federal Road Safety Commission, Red Cross Society, tanker drivers' association, youth council, media houses and health officers.
Oredo Council Chairman, Mr. Edor Ebomoyi, said he hoped the affected part of the market would be rebuilt before the end of the year.
