Nnamani urges students to embrace dialogue
From Lawrence Njoku, Enugu
DIALOGUE, as an age-long tool for resolving dispute, is the best option to be used by students, Enugu State Governor Chimaroke Nnamani has advised.
The governor's advice came following the recent protest embarked upon by students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Enugu State, against the recent increase in their school fees by the authorities of the institution.
During the protest, commercial activities in Enugu and Nsukka were brought a standstill.
Governor Nnamani, who spoke during a consultative meeting with the student union governments of the state University of Science and Technology (ESUT), UNN and the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, appealed to the students to "toe the path of peace and avoid violence and demonstration since such actions could led to a breakdown of law and order which may not be in their best interest".
On the current misunderstanding between the students and authorities of the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, Governor Nnamani advised them to enter into negotiations with the school authorities for a lasting solution.
He told the students' union executive that no problem is above dialogue and appealed to them to avoid any action that could lead to the closure of the school or disrupt their academic programme, adding that government would meet with the authority on how best to settle the issue.
He told the students of the four institutions that the meeting was arranged to thank them for their support for the government and also to explain to them some of the programmes of the administration.
The governor advised them to shun cultism, violence and other social vices.
He also urged the students to endeavour to sustain and improve on the present security situation in the campuses, adding that government would fulfil its promises to them, including bursary awards.
