Why Afenifere crisis persists, by Oyinlola
From Bertram Nwannekanma, Osogbo

OSUN State Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, at the weekend attributed the unending crisis rocking the Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, to the existence of "some people who think they are more Yoruba than others".

He added that the Afenifere crisis has remained because the group excluded non- Alliance for Democracy (AD) members from its fold, despite the fact that it was supposed to be an umbrella body for the Yoruba.

The governor spoke as guest on a monthly local television, Osun State Broadcasting Corporation (OSBC) programme tagged: "Open Forum" at Osogbo. He said: "It is not fair to exclude Yoruba people who are members of political parties other than AD from the activities of Afenifere, that is why the group has serious problems".

He continued: "Every Yoruba citizen, no matter his party affiliation should be integrated and accommodated in the Afenifere programmes, if it is really the umbrella body for the Yorubas".

Oyinlola, who recalled that the Afenifere crisis began after the death of Michael Ajasin Adekunle, observed that Yoruba as a single largest ethnic group in Africa cannot afford to be disunited if their continued relevance in Nigeria project would be maintained.

"The creation of small empires like the Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE), amongst others was the bane of Afenifere, shortly after the demise of Ajasin," he added.

He cautioned some Yoruba who have been at the forefront of fanning the embers of disunity to be mindful of their activities, saying the race is noted for its unity.

On the tourism potential of the state, the governor said the Erin Ijesha Airstrip would become operational early next year.
