Please, don't kill Gani

SIR: I was filled with dismay when I read in the papers about the latest attempt on the life of the venerable Gani Fawehinmi. It is now certain that we are heading to nowhere but the abyss. To kill the likes of Gani would amount to crushing out the life from the writhing soul of a nation with a dearth of honest, lawful and sensible politicians.

Here is a man who, from the beginning, has been most steadfast and selfless in his pursuit of the salvation of his most abused and traumatised countrymen. This is a man I, like most informed Nigerians, would have voted for in the last Presidential elections. I could not have voted for Ojukwu because the cabals would not have allowed him to implement his pet projects: true federalism, resource control and de-centralisation.

Not for Obasanjo because I could not stomach the socio-political stench in the country any longer. Of course not Buhari, for though he exhibited discipline but I saw no justice in his first coming. And certainly not Okotie for the nation was not in the mood of shouting hallelujah. But the Gani we all know would have, as the president of this country, injected justice and equity into the polity. This is the only remedy needed to save this country from imminent destruction.

It is an open secret that in this country, there are people in high places who would be happy to see Gani in his grave today. Can't there be some morals and conscience in Nigerian politics? But please, don't kill Gani. Nigerians, do not let them kill your prophets. And to God Almighty I pray, protect Gani and all of us.

Celestine Ebubeogu,
Lagos
