GTC Owerri wins Imo championship
By Christian Okpara
GOVERNMENT Technical College (GTC) Owerri on Friday at the football field of the Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri, defeated Community Secondary School, Okigwe, 2-1 to emerge Imo State champions of the 2005 Shell Cup football competition for secondary schools.
GTC, which had earlier defeated Comprehensive Secondary School, Iho, Ikeduru 2-1 and Marshall Secondary Commercial College 3-0 on their way to the finals, got their first goal against the run of play in the third minute of the first half of added time through Elendu Uchendu, who capitalised on a defensive blunder to beat the Okigwe side's goalkeeper, Osondu Ohaegbu.
The Okigwe team dominated a better part of the match, but their inability to utilise the numerous chances they created was their greatest undoing.
The skilful Community Secondary School Okigwe boys were a delight to watch as their incisive dribbles and accurate passes kept the GTC boys at bay, but they lacked the killer instinct to finish off their fine moves.
Led by skilful Njoku Chikezie, the Okigwe boys tried all they could to score but the GTC defence line led by Obioma Mba and Oluigbo Daniel did not allow them to make hay.
The regulation time ended on a goalless note, with the referee ordering for extra time as a winner had to emerge in the match.
And as if the Owerri boys were waiting for the added period to announce their intention of winning the match, they swooped on the Okigwe team's defence and on one of such forays, a CSS Okigwe's defender carelessly gave the ball away, giving Uchendu the opportunity to beat Ohaegbu with a low short.
Jolted by the goal, the CSS Okigwe boys tried to fight back, but GTC defence stood their ground.
The second half of the added time was barely four minutes old when the Owerri boys struck again. Man of the match, Okorom Okechi stole the ball in the midfield before giving a short pass to Franklin Oleh, who released a long-range shot that slipped through the hands of Osondu Ohaegbu, for the second goal of the match.
However, CSS, Okigwe got a consolatory goal in the dying minutes of the match through Obana Offem.
With this victory, Government Technical College, Owerri, has qualified to represent Imo State in the zonal preliminaries of the competition, scheduled for Umuahia later in the month.
