Non-indigenes to pay N75,000 yearly in Zamfara schools

After introducing the
Sharia legal code aimed at lifting social morals, Zamfara State government has
again introduced a new education policy that discriminates against
non-indigenes who are now to cough up N75,000 yearly for boarding school.
Parents and guardians
have started receiving letters to that effect. The letters, signed by school
principals asked parents to pay N25,000 per term. They got the letters when
students vacated for Ed-el-fitr break.
It was learnt that
parents have started making arrangements to withdraw their wards from public
schools because they cannot afford to pay the new fees that ensures that day
students and primary school pupils will pay N10,000 and N5,000 respectively per
term.
The letter, it was
learnt, also demanded that if a student claims to be an indigene of Zamfara he
must produce documents from his local government chairman to prove same.
It was also learnt that
non-indigenes parents and guardians have decided that rather pay the fees they
would transfer their wards to private schools.
Most of the
parents/guardians interview by Daily Independent expressed
displeasure at the new fees, saying they preferred to transfer their children
even outside the state.
According to Mallam
Salisu, “It is too much for Zamafara to introduce N25,000 per term to
non-indigenes, which means one has to pay N75,000 per year if he want his son
to school in the state”.
As a result of this,
private schools have started to record high patronage of parents seeking
admission for their wards.
The education ministry
has directed students, who are not from Zamfara, to pay their fees before
schools reopen next term or they would not be allowed in schools.
The directive is contained in the letter sent to all the
parents of the affected students on Friday as the schools closed for the sallah
break.
