Human predators in Nigeria

Thank you for your Wit and Wisdom entry of Tuesday September 28, 2004. It quotes Gandhi: "The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated ". I wish there is a way of bringing those words to every Nigerian particularly our leaders or alleged leaders in every sector. I wonder whether Gandhi's animals include the human animal who in Nigeria is treated little better than used toilet paper. Stretching back to the slave trade era when many were abducted by their fellow blacks and sold off to aliens till date, the human being is given little regard in the struggle of the survival of the meanest. In Nigeria today, human corpses are left to decompose in full public view, children are sold off or abducted to serve as cheap labour (slavery) or into prostitution or simply ritually murdered! Pensioners are not paid and gratuity/pension schemes are tossed aside to be replaced with new schemes whose operation no one cares to explain to hapless workers. What of education, healthcare and various other welfare services? There is no need to go further. In Nigeria humans are predators with fellow human beings as favourite prey. No wonder our Human Development Index score is consistently low. The Human Misery Index would of course be astronomically high. Truly, until we accord the human being proper regard we shall remain stuck at the bottom of the development league. What might Gandhi have thought of us?
