FIFA controversy slows down activities at NFA

By Ben Alaiya

Group Sports Editor

Fear of the unknown by the leadership of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) and the Sports Ministry’s desperate attempt to replace the present NFA leadership have combined to slow down the pace of activities at Nigeria’s football Glass House in Abuja.

Daily Independent learnt that since FIFA gave its December 31 ultimatum to Nigeria to straighten its football rules or face the chop, the ministry has perfected a plan to clear-out the present NFA lords in its attempt to impress FIFA that it was doing the right thing.

The grand design was revealed in the new statutes drawn up for the NFA last month and which is scheduled to be taken to FIFA later this month for approval.

But a former NFA chairman, craving anonymity, told Daily Independent on Sunday night that the ministry was merely paying lip service to the issue of reforms at the NFA. The issue, he said, is seen as a war on individuals as the ministry wants to install its own men at the NFA. But he noted that it would not work in the long run. Sports Minister, Col Musa Mohammed, who was expected from his trip outside the country at the weekend, is to lead the Nigerian delegation to the FIFA headquarters for a jaw-jaw session with top officials there, but insiders say nothing will come out of the visit as FIFA has been monitoring the development and is convinced that nothing positive has so far been done by Nigeria.

The ministry’s clear-out plan includes fresh elections into the NFA and a new leadership at the NFA secretariat.
