The Nigeria Football Association is still
keeping Flying Eagles chief coach, Samson Siasia, in the dark as to where the
team would be camped ahead of the African Youth Championship (AYC) scheduled
for January in Republic of Benin.
Siasia had travelled to Abuja last week to
firm up arrangements on the next stage of preparations but was told by NFA
Scribe, Chief Taiwo Ogunjobi, that discussion for a new campsite was in
progress.
On this score, the ex-international was
informed that before 15 November a location would have been chosen so that
preparations could commence immediately given the fact that the time is short.
“That was what I was made to
understand that between the 10th and 15th of this month they would have secured
a site for us. Probably what is holding them back is that no state has come out
to say they are interested in hosting us,” said Siasia, who revealed this
in a telephone interview at the weekend.
Prior to their AYC qualifier against
Burkina Faso, which they won 5-2 on goals aggregate, the national team was
camped in Ibadan, Oyo State, but speculations abound that the players have
kicked against Ibadan on the premise that the state Governor, Rashidi Ladoja,
failed to honour his promise. Sources informed Daily Independent that Ladoja
promised each player N50,000 should they qualify for the championship.
Siasia, who at a time was said to have
abandoned the team owing to alleged interference from Technical Director
Kashimawo Laloko, revealed that he was happy with the recent state of the team
given the support he has enjoyed from the players.
He, however, added that notwithstanding the
fact that his request for foreign camping was turned down by NFA, it still did
not reduce the team’s chances of lifting the trophy, but he hinged such
chances on the necessary facilities which have to be provided by the NFA
leadership.
Siasia becomes the second ex-Super Eagles
international to coach the team after Stephen Keshi now with the Togolese
national team, who guided the team to the 2001 edition held in Ethiopia.
